Think generational cap are wide in the US? Move to China

For several years generational gaps have been the buzz. Articles have been written about generation Y. About their views, their purchasing habits and especially how they use technology. Generation Y appears to be a fascinating generation but also one that is extremely frustrating to the generation before them. But if you think that wide generational caps exist in the US just take a look at China.

In China currently the majority of the work force is made up by children born in the 1980s under the one child per family rule. This generation of Chinese is extremely educated because for all of their lives their education was focused on by 6 adults. Their parents and both sets of grandparents drove them to excel from the time they started Kindergarten. There are several elements of the Chinese Y generation that separate them from Generation X.

  1. More Emotional
Ge X is surprised at the amount of emotion that the Gen Y brings into the work place.
  2. Less Compliant
Generation X adhered to a strict business hierarchy but they are finding that Gen Y does not.
  3. More Vocal
For many Chinese in Gen X they do not often voice their opinions especially in meetings. Members of the Gen Y however are very confident to voice their opinion in meetings.
  4. Enjoy Brainstorming
Another difference is that Gen Y enjoys brainstorming. They feed off of their peers.

This information other information was done in research by Business Week. They survey current Gen Y workers. One of the most interesting statements made was the fact that Gen Y gets overly enthusiastic about projects but they are also easily discourage about them. My take is that perhaps they are more task orientated then Gen X. Maybe they like to see things accomplished more than Gen X.
